Of Windows Phone 8 and Random Reboots

Those who are experiencing random reboots in Windows Phone 8 are about to get a fix

I get periodic emails from folks who are experiencing random reboots on their Windows Phone 8 handsets. While I don’t believe I am experiencing this issue, there is some good news: Microsoft says it is working on delivering a fix in December.

My own experience with the HTC Windows Phone 8X I use daily has been very positive and, from what I can tell, largely error-free. I do recall getting a weird random reboot on day one—literally, at the Windows Phone 8 launch event after having received the phone—and then one other time. That’s it.

But feedback via email and Twitter suggests there is indeed a problem. Some have suggested that the Skype beta app—which does integrate itself deeply into Windows Phone 8, like a tick—is at fault. I do of course have the Skype app installed, so I’m not sure what to say to that.

Microsoft says a fix is coming, and soon.

“We’re continuing to investigate some reports of phones rebooting and have identified a cause with our partners,” a Microsoft representative said. “We are working to get an over-the-air update out in December.”

Of course, this being the Windows Phone team, this statement is deliberately vague. (At least they said something.) For example, the word “partners” suggests one or more hardware makers (HTC, Nokia) … or one or more software makers, who could also be at fault. (Is Skype a partner?) They didn’t specify which phones are affected or what the cause is, just that the problem was identified and a fix is coming.

I’ll take it. Hopefully this fixes the problem.

I am lucky. I have had my Lumia 920 since the day of general availability and I have had not one single restart issue. My phone has been rock solid.

The first week I had the phone, I had one random reboot and several lockups followed by reboots, but I chalked the latter up to the apps I was running.

For the last several days I have had no issues.

Sounds like Windows a la 1990s. WP going retro?

I have the HTC 8X also.I love the phone, but I have also had random reboot issues. It happens about 1 a week, so not a lot and never when I am actually using it. I do not have Skype installed, so that's not it.

I've had nearly half a dozen reboots since I got the phone on 13th November - all of my crashes seem to be related to Bluetooth use.

I had just read about the 'random reboot' on a different tech blog, then opened up 'cut the rope' and after a few levels, my HTC 8x rebooted.

I've only had this happen to me once with my Nokia 822 from verizon. It was when I was in a middle of a txt. Otherwise I have not seen it again.

I have this happen every day or two on my HTC 8X on O2 in the UK but its just a little bit annoying. To be fair its never happened when I'm using it and the only time i realise it happens is when the phone buzzes on or when i look at the start screen and the people tile is blank. Though it is annoying i can safety say its not to do with Skype as i have had them since before i installed it and as a matter of fact before i installed any apps as i had an account issue that prevented me from installing them due to 'My family' having a fit even tho I'm an adult... so this leads me to think its an issue with the hardware integration if its an issue that hasn't popped up in the windows phone emulators.

My 920 has locked up and rebooted about 5 times since release day. From my observations, the problems seem to be connected to Bluetooth. I have had the resets and other issues such as music player randomly starting music after using a BT headset and using voice commands. Glad a fix is on the way. Other than this, I love the phone.

I haven't experienced this problem at all with my HTC 8X, but I think the good news here is that Microsoft is actually responding to a problem, communicating that someone there cares. That could be a positive sign, if it is sustained.

My Lumia 920 worked perfectly for 4 days, then AT&T added back my unlimited data plan (they dropped my data plan when I upgraded my phone online), and my phone became completely unreliable, applications would randomly not launch (even email), and if I attempted to setup visual voice mail by entering my voice-mail pin into the pop-up prompt, the phone would freeze and then reboot every time I tried. I think AT&T was doing something WP8 didn't expect and put it into a bad state. I restored my phone via "settings->about->reset your phone", setup my MS account again, all my installed apps were back, and the phone was back to its original stable state ever since... seems like there are some robustness issues to work out for some unexpected situations... its a brand new OS, not just a update to WP7, so its not too surprising.

Sounds no different to Windows Phone 7.x My Nokia Lumia 900 running 7.5 does random reboots once in a while. Looks like they havnt fixed a bug thats been around for a long while.

While I've had no random reboots, I have had lock-ups when answering calls on my 822. It always happens on BT when I answer a call the lock screen show and the phone rings but no attempts to end the call or use the screen works. I have to pull the battery to clear it. Seems like it may be BT at the heart of the issue. Only happened about 3 times since the phone was released.
