Windows Phone 8 App Pick: Kindle

The Kindle app picks up native Windows Phone 8 support

Today, Amazon upgraded its Kindle app for Windows Phone to version 2, adding native support for Windows Phone 8 and elevating this gotta-have-it app even further in my estimation. The Kindle app is one of the very first apps I install on Windows Phone, and now it’s even better.

For the most part, Kindle works as before, integrating with your cloud-based Kindle library and allowing you to download books to the device and read them online and off. It uses Amazon’s vaunted Whispersync technology to keep your place in a book that’s read on multiple devices, and of course has all the same user experience customization capabilities as before. Functionally, it’s pretty much the same as always, with the same gorgeous Metro user interface.

(As with many other Kindle mobile app versions, however, what you don’t gain access to are periodicals (New York Times and so on) and the intriguing Whispersync for Voice feature that still requires Kindle devices, not apps. Since Windows Phone has both Kindle and Audible apps, I have to think this is coming.)

What’s new in version 2, of course, is Windows Phone 8 support. And this support is pretty meaningful:

Supports all Windows Phone 8 resolutions

The Kindle app now supports all Windows Phone 8 resolutions, including 720p and 1280 x 768. If you used the previous app version, you may have seen black bars at the top of the screen.

Now the Kindle app fills the entire screen, as you would expect:

New live tile capabilities

Amazon changed the Kindle tile from its previous familiar graphic to what appears to be, at first, a plain orange tile.

But the new tile supports the three possible tile sizes and, best of all, it’s dynamic. So it will display information about the book you’re reading now as well.

(Yes, you can still pin individual books to the Start screen if you prefer.)

Overall, what we’ve got here is the excellent Kindle app we’ve always enjoyed, nicely updated for Windows Phone 8. Highly recommended.

You can download the Kindle app for Windows Phone 8 (and Windows Phone 7.5) from the Windows Phone Store.

Excellent Kindle app? Seriously: you can't make notes, mark quotes, send personal documents to your device etc etc.

You still can't search which is a huge bummer.

Two of the things I wish the Kindle App (both on WP8 and Windows 8) could do are 1)read epub and text books I have stored in my Skydrive, 2) save my Kindle Books even if DRM'd to my Skydrive and 3) save/copy clippings from my books to other documents/skydrive with reference links. These would make it great for students and making it a single app to manage all of my books.

If you saw or are planning to see the movie "Lincoln" and want to read some primary source material, I recommend "Speeches and Letters of Abraham Lincoln, 1832 - 1865". It's free on the Kindle app and I've made at least 20 bookmarks so far (I'm half way through it).

Amazon treats Windows Phone and Windows 8/RT as second class citizens. The WP8 version does not allow for highlighting or input of notes. Neither of the WP8 or Win RT/8 versions allow for importing of .mobi or .prc or .pdf files, instead only allowing for books purchased through the Amazon store, as the Android versions of Kindle do. The worst is that the Win RT version of Kindle only allows for a very limited storage of books on the device. I can only get about 8 books on the device before it runs out of storage. Books you manually put on your WinRT or Win8 device can not be ready, so there is no work around to this storage limitation. It is nice to at least be able to get to all my Kindle books, but I sure wish that the WP8 version had feature parity with Android and that the Win8/RT version had feature parity with the Windows Desktop version.

I too find the inability to highlight to be annoying and disappointing considering said feature is offered on the iOS version. It's silly, but I feel like the lack of feature parity is disrespectful to the WP platform.

The tile isn't dynamic for me, just an orange blob in 3 different sizes. Surely this isn't yet another region restriction thing that only works in the US...

Nothing about this app is good - in fact it's even worse than the older version! As someone already commented, can't read .mobi, .pdf, etc. - functionality that exists on iOS and Android versions of the app. Since the update, the font resizing is not remembered (I have to resize the font every time I open the app), and the page width and line spacing adjustments in the app do NOTHING. And my tile also isn't live, just a big orange blob. If you haven't already upgraded, DON'T! C'mon, Amazon, get it together.
