Windows Phone 8 Does Not (Currently) Support Xbox Video

This one surprises me, but there's no way to get Xbox Video content on Windows Phone 8

This one falls under a category that I’ve found myself increasingly susceptible to in recent days: Because something has worked one way for so long, I assume it just keeps working that way … But it doesn’t. And that’s what happened when it comes to transferring Xbox Video-based TV show and movie content to Windows Phone 8. You can’t.

The question: Confused by his inability to get a movie or TV show he’d purchased from Xbox Video onto his Windows Phone 8 handset, someone pinged me on Twitter to ask how it worked.

The background: With Windows Phone 7.x, you could purchase movies and TV shows (and rent movies) from Xbox Video’s predecessor, Zune Marketplace, and then transfer it to your device over USB. Surely, the modern equivalents of this process—the Windows Phone app, Windows Phone desktop application, or simple drag-and-drop transfer over File Explorer—will work with Windows Phone 8?

Nope.

None of these methods worked, and after an increasingly frustrating afternoon testing every possible permutation of this, I finally caved and pinged Microsoft. Surely I was missing something.

Again, nope.

“Transfer of the movies and TV shows purchased from the Xbox Video store to the phone using the Windows Phone apps is not currently supported,” I was told.

That seems to leave some wiggle room, but trust me, I tried every other possible method too. For example, you can download the content via the Zune PC software—yes, it still works—and then try copying it over to the phone with File Explorer. It doesn’t work.

The error message varies depending on which solution you try, but here’s the message I saw with the Windows Phone (Metro-style) app:

The thing is, the way this used to work is sort of second rate. Both Android and iPhone/iOS support full device-based access to TV shows and movies in the ecosystem’s respective stores, Play and iTunes, and you can purchase/rent and download this content to the device over the air. On Windows Phone 7.x, you had to do a hokey PC sync to make that happen.

At least it worked. In Windows Phone 8, this activity has gone from second rate to non-existent. So this is now the rare example of where we had functionality in the previous version of a Microsoft product and lost it in the otherwise superior new version.

The word “currently” gives me hope that this will be fixed. But still. Not good.

Honestly, the entire Windows 8 sync process has become second rate with the removal of the Zune software. Hopefully getting things back up to par is a high priority for the windows phone team.

Paul, I've been watching and listening to your podcast for so long, it feels like I know you. That being said, we purchased a Nokia 920. After everything we've listened to, I was still confused about the whole Zune vs. Winphone Sync software. I've gotten music to sync, then realized .. what about my video's? I went down the same support path and ran into the same issues. Then I realized my xbox marketplace isn't recognizing my zune.net ID and password and after hours and hours, I gave in. Only having the option to chat with MSFT support is salt in the wound. Not sure of our next steps. Keep writing and I'll keep listening.

A family affair.
This is an example of how the "all-windows" strategy led by MS management created a void around the system itself. This kind of interoperability is just about infrastructure compliance, certificates, codex, and all this kind of stuff.
Microsoft reminds me a big operator in France which is so big and so "politikised" that a lot of building blocks do not interoperate, even inside the same offer.
You pay, as a customer, the bad internal politics by a global lack of harmony, as if you were invited for holidays in a family where everyone hates each others. When you are invited in such a family, you politely wait until the end of holidays, but once it is over, you never come back.
After all, we, the Public, are not Sinowski's employees and we are free to choose in which family we want to spend the holidays.

As i found out last night it also does not like syncing your music to the Xbox or WP8. This said even the phone does not sync with the other two devices. I did however get my Xbox to sync partially to my phone. Bad show Microsoft http://goo.gl/JHKIb.

Does this problem apply to all .wmv files or just drm'd files?

Am I correct in assuming that normal mp3 files can be copied over using file explorer?

Windows Phone does not support .wav files either :(

ARGH! I was trying to do this yesterday. Transfer just a couple of movies purchased through Zune for my WinPhone7 to my new Lumia920. When that failed, I tried to buy a movie straight through the WP8 device. No option.

This is unbelievable. Apparently there is a 2 week window to return after the AT&T upgrade. I'm doing that next week unless Microsoft comes out with a reason why the hell they took basic functionality away - and when it will come back.

And why in the world is the only way to sycn the phone to my Windows 7 computer through a Beta version of an app, which I had to upgrade my .Net software for?

Botched release for sure. I was looking forward to showing this Cyan colored phone to all of my friends. Now I need to hide it in shame.

I kind of assumed, with the Xbox Video app for Windows 8, that Windows Phone 8 would support Marketplace browsing/purchasing for new content and streaming of previously purchased content.

There's some weird inconsistencies with the platform(s) at the minute. For example - I can't even play my previously-bought HD content (movies and shows) on my Surface. My SD movies show up fine, but the HD content is nowhere to be found...

And, yes, as you pointed out, access to the video marketplace or video content in general is seriously restricted on Windows Phone 8.

Hoping this stuff gets ironed out and brought in line over the next few months.

That is odd. I purchased the HD version of MIB 3 on my desktop and it played fine on my Surface when I streamed it. I had purchased HD versions of The Raven (Xbox Video) and Avengers (Zune), and transferred them to an SD card and they played fine on the Surface. I have not had a chance to pick up a new 920 yet, so I do not know about that.

It's still early as the phones have just launched but, has there been any more info on the enthusiast update option for WP8 or how cooperative the carriers will be with those this time around? Knowing that there are these kinds of features missing and after feeling burned with the lack of updates for the 1st gen Focus. I'm a little hesitant to pull the trigger on a new Windows Phone. It's all starting to feel like deja vu from two years ago.

It's supposed to be direct updates from MS, but if you go that route and have problems with your phone your carrier won't help you.

I love the phone, but this type of basic functionality is to be expected, not yearned for. It is obvious that the great phone beta test is NOT over, and that MS is using us all as beta testers. My only problem with that is I'm paying for all these toys. Getting a little tired of waiting just a little bit longer for this and that and the other things that aren't quite ready yet.

On a nicer note, that ability to create playlists using Smart Glass on the phone with the Xbox is phenomenal. The whole creating playlists thing on Xbox in general is an experience they seem to have nailed. They need to nail everything else and hurry it up.

Podcast sync is also a bit of a joke. if you are outside the USA the option of downloading from the store doesn't exist. You also can't put an RSS feed url into the sync software.

Basically it's broken. If I want to have podcasts it means taking my ipod touch with me as well as my Windowsphone 8x.

I tried for an hour too my 920 with no avail - basic functionality that is missing and inexcusable. They have no hope to compete with Google/Apple in this state. I love Win8 and WinPho8 but, its hard to be a MS evangelist with issues like these.

I love windows phone. My next phone is a 920 of 8x (probably 920), but @#$@# where is the #!#@% VPN support? Seriously. I thought it was sharing the windows 8 networking stack, which you'd think would include vpn.

The only other thing that I really feel is missing are ring profiles. Apple finally got this in ios6. I want my phone to shut up after 10pm. Phone calls should be able to get through but all the other notifications should stop making noise!

Rare Example?

How about Podcasts on the desktop? WiFi Sync? Auto playlists? Ratings?

This is the perfect example of why I gave up on Microsoft for consumer products. I still love me some Xbox though for gaming mostly, some movie watching.

It took Microsoft FOREVER to get things going, as in bring all of their products together for the consumer. Hotmail or um....Live mail...or no Outlook.com was the last player to even get email, calendar, contacts syncing to computers and smartphone. Add to that all of the CONSTANT name changing of products (or canceling, Zune), plus stuff like this that you would think would work and you just frustrate the hell out of users.

Frustrated users just walk away. Apple's ecosystem is just so inviting to Joe Consumer, its no wonder Apple is basically printing money.

So I rented a movie on my Surface and started watching it on the train in my daily commute to work. When I got home, I wanted to "air-play" this on my Xbox, so hit the send to Xbox button. But no joy, it prompts me to re-purchase the rental on the Xbox, while I can send any other DRM free video to the console. Really Microsoft?? are you serious about taking on Apple?? with half-baked solutions like this?
