Windows Phone 8 “Portico” Heads Out to HTC Windows Phone 8X on AT&T

The HTC Windows Phone 8X picks up Microsoft's first update for Windows Phone 8

I previously wrote that the first Windows Phone 8 software update, codenamed “Portico” had been delivered to Nokia Lumia 920 and 820 handsets in the US and Canada. This week, the update was made available to the HTC Windows Phone 8X on AT&T, so I got a second chance to review the update process and see the changes this update provides.

You can read about my experience installing Portico on the Lumia 820 in Windows Phone 8 “Portico” Heads Out to Lumia 920 and 820.

Microsoft has published an official list of changes for this update. According to the software giant, Portico includes the following changes:

Messaging improvements. You can now add multiple recipients at the same time when you send a text message and automatically save unsent text messages as drafts. You can also edit received text messages before you forward them.

Text replies to incoming calls. Now you can send a prewritten text reply to a caller directly from the call answer screen when you can't take a call normally. It's a nice way to let people know that you're not ignoring them.

Internet Explorer improvements. You can now change your settings to prevent pictures from downloading automatically—an easy way to help keep data usage low. (Easy and obvious. It’s unclear why this wasn’t a feature from day one.) You can also delete selected sites from your browsing history and leave the rest intact.

Wi-Fi connectivity. Windows Phone 8 will now prioritize Wi-Fi connections based on your connection history, so that your most-often-used networks are listed first.

Other improvements. Portico includes “many other improvements to Windows Phone”.

Here are some screenshots of the HTC 8X making the update happen. The update requires a single reboot.

One of the unlisted updates is that in the ME tile, the notifications have changed so that (for example) if you're mentioned in a tweet instead of saying "@windowsphone mentions you in a tweet", it also shows that full tweet so you don't have to tap to read it.

Saves one less tap when you want to see tweets that need replying to.

Has there been any word or ETA for the Nokia 822 and 8X on Verizon?

No "Portico" for my Verizon HTC 8x yet...

Has anyone noticed on the portico update that music will just start playing on its own after hanging up the phone, unplugging headphones or shutting off a Bluetooth device? Sort of annoying on my Nokia 920.

I think my 920 came with Portico out of the box. I got it just after the new year from Telstra in Australia. My 920 does the "auto play" thing. I assumed it was the podcast app I was using, but they all seem to do it. My HD7 never did it. Sometimes it's nice - I can just hop in the car and within a few seconds Bluetooth is ready and my podcast just starts. But leaving the car means I have to explicitly stop the podcast, wait for Bluetooth to disappear, wait for the podcast to start again and then stop it (since I don't want to walk around with a podcast playing from my pocket!)

My Telstra branded Lumia 920 has OS version 8.0.9903.10, and I believe that "Portico" is version 8.0.10211.204. It would be nice if Australia could get "Portico" sooner rather than later, but the last I heard is that anyone outside the US needs to wait until February before we get it.

Nice. I am so happy that WP8 got a update before I got 7.8.

"Includes many other improvements to Windows Phone." Are these just bug fixes? A bit frustrating if it was something I would find useful but didn't know.

Let's hope Verizon follows suit soon. The time gab for this update between carrier and models is disappointing. It looks like nothing has changed compared to Windows Phone 7.

I want to like the WP system, however as time goes by my patience is running thin. It is extremely frustrating that robust apps developed by established companies have yet to develop. The current WP system is weak and offers nothing under the façade. One will point out OneNote, ect. But what does OneNote really offer...it is a static program with no integration with the Task/Calendar. I have been a Windows die hard since W3.1 (WM (I miss those apps), Home server, Xbox, ect) and I am coming to the realization that MS will never live up to the value added benefit I always hoped it would add to my lifestyle. It probably is time to move one, at some point the greiving process must end.
