Windows Phone 8 “Portico” Heads Out to HTC Windows Phone 8X on Verizon

Portico slowly heads out to more and more Windows Phone 8 handsets

About a month after its release to AT&T Wireless customers, the first Windows Phone 8 update, codenamed “Portico,” is apparently heading out to HTC Windows Phone 8X users on Verizon Wireless as well.

I don’t have any Windows Phone handsets on Verizon Wireless, so I can’t test this update personally. But WPCentral’s Daniel Rubino reports that the update is appearing for Verizon customers. Verizon’s support site still claims the update is coming soon.

I wrote about Portico previously in Windows Phone 8 “Portico” Heads Out to HTC Windows Phone 8X on AT&T and noted the following changes:

Messaging improvements. You can now add multiple recipients at the same time when you send a text message and automatically save unsent text messages as drafts. You can also edit received text messages before you forward them.

Text replies to incoming calls. Now you can send a prewritten text reply to a caller directly from the call answer screen when you can't take a call normally. It's a nice way to let people know that you're not ignoring them.

Internet Explorer improvements. You can now change your settings to prevent pictures from downloading automatically—an easy way to help keep data usage low. (Easy and obvious. It’s unclear why this wasn’t a feature from day one.) You can also delete selected sites from your browsing history and leave the rest intact.

Wi-Fi connectivity. Windows Phone 8 will now prioritize Wi-Fi connections based on your connection history, so that your most-often-used networks are listed first.

Other improvements. Portico includes “many other improvements to Windows Phone”.

According to Verizon (PDF), however, Portico adds the following:

  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth profile have been improved for performance.
  • Increased flexibility to manage browser history.
  • Added capability to select an MP3 file as a ring tone.
  • Incremental security feature allowing user to restrict calls to a limited list of numbers.
  • Messaging enhancements to allow user to edit an MMS while forwarding.
  • User can auto-retry with connectivity, multi-select recipients for a message and ignore calls with SMS reply

Those interested in updating their HTC Windows Phone 8X handset to Portico can find instructions on the Verizon web site.

I just got an 8X on Vodafone in the UK and the update was applied automatically as soon as I connected to a wireless network.

I installed this update on a Nokia Lumia 920 three weeks ago. It broke the phone - the signal kept dropping and reconnecting, then dropping and not coming back which killed the battery time to less than 6 hours. A day later Nokia removed notification of the update from thier support site. The phone is currently with nokia repairs. Nokia refused to comment on the issues with this update.

Still no group messaging on Verizon! Epic fail

Uh, I have Verizon and I do group messaging on my 8X. Just create a group in the People hub like Best Friends or whatever, go to the group and hit Text Everyone. None of my friends in the group have the 8X and it texts them fine. Also when I recieve group text messaages and reply it replies to everyone.

And yet still no sign of 7.8.. I gotta hand it to MS, they're very steadfast in their quest to eliminate the "legacy" WP userbase, but whether they upgrade to WP8 or not remains to be seen.. Since the market share is stuck @ 3% I have to guess some people are jumping ship..

Like I who jumped onto iPhone 5 after realizing MS does not care about WP. If they don't, why should I? Besides, despite its antique UI, iPhone just works, unlike WP, which is pretty on the outside but empty on the inside (like HTC's uninnovative hardware; no wonder it was chosen as signature, as it so aptly reflects what WP is.)

I have to second the disappointment on no group messaging. My kids are going to hate me.

I still wonder if this is something Verizon asked to have turned off for Windows Phone or if WP8 group SMS and Verizon's network are incompatible.

You can do group messaging through the people hub and create a room but the group messaging part only works if everyone has a windows 8 phone. AGAIN EPIC FAIL!

Mine is installing as I write this. I chose to do a manual check for updates just to see if it was available, and it started downloading immediately.

I have to say, I am genuinely and completely floored. I honestly sincerely did not expect to receive this update, or Blue, or any other updates. Blame it on Microsoft for being so *stupid* as to put updates in the hands of the carriers (seriously, nobody else is that bone dead retarded), blame it on the carriers for being fundamentally evil...whatever, there's plenty of fault to go around.

I will file this under "pleasant surprises for the day" and proceed to have a good rest of my day :-)

I still don't have the update on my Nokia 920 I got at build, connected to ATT&T. Anyone have an Idea on when that might happen?

I got my portly on Sunday on Bell in Canada if anyone cares.

My battery life and performance have drastically improved - however, it fails to fix my discoloring 8x lolz!

I also got 7.8 on Rogers about three weeks ago...

Phone is beginning to seize up after update. Phone goes dark during calls and requires reboot to unlock. Cannot believe I cannot hear my wav formatted FIOS voice mails. APP situation is horrible. Banking apps, Starbucks and a bunch of other apps show no signs of coming out anytime soon. Really thinking of buying an iPhone 5 and sticking my HTC 8x in the closet for 6 months.
