Windows Phone 8 “Portico” Heads Out to Lumia 920 and 820

Microsoft delivers the first Windows Phone 8 software update

Nokia announced today that the eagerly awaited “Portico” update for Windows Phone 8 is now being delivered to Lumia 920 and 820 handsets in the US and Canada. This is notable for a number of reasons, given the issues that Windows Phone users have had in the past getting updates.

“Because we’re committed to providing a fantastic experience to our Lumia 920 and 820 customers, we are releasing a software update that brings a number of enhancements initially to the Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 at AT&T in the United States and to the Lumia 920 at Rogers in Canada,” Jason Harris wrote in a post to the Conversations by Nokia blog. “Although this update is initially available for owners on AT&T and Rogers in North America, we haven’t forgotten about Lumia owners in other markets. Rest assured, we are working with Microsoft and our operator partners around the globe to ensure the highest quality software updates for our family of Lumia smartphones. Together with Microsoft, we aim at beginning to deliver these updates to other markets in early February 2013.”

With Windows Phone 7.x, users found that many updates were delayed interminably, often for months, by recalcitrant wireless carriers. And when they were available, the updates had to be installed via the PC, with the phone tethered over Wi-Fi.

With Windows Phone 8, apparently, that’s changing. AT&T, among the worst of the wireless carrier offenders with previous generation handsets, is among the first delivering this first Windows Phone 8 update. And it’s happening over the air, directly to the device, and completely PC-free.

Folks, can I get a Halleluiah?

According to Nokia, this update includes the following enhancements on the Lumia 920 and 820:’

·         Enhancements in Messaging

·         More efficient and reliable Bluetooth connectivity

·         More efficient and reliable start-up sequence

·         Enhancements in imaging performance and battery management

·         Additional platform updates and enhancements

But Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 update history page has a bit more information about the update, which brings the OS version number up to 8.0.10211.204:

Messaging improvements. A great messaging experience is now even better. You can now add multiple recipients at the same time when you send a text message and automatically save unsent text messages as drafts. You can even edit received text messages before you forward them.

Text replies to incoming calls. Can't take a call? Now you can send a prewritten text reply to a caller directly from the call answer screen. It's a nice way to let people know that you're not ignoring them.

Internet Explorer improvements. You can now change your settings to prevent pictures from downloading automatically—an easy way to help keep data usage low. You can also delete selected sites from your browsing history and leave the rest intact.

Wi-Fi connectivity. Got a favorite Wi-Fi network? Windows Phone 8 will now prioritize Wi-Fi connections based on your connection history.

Other improvements. Includes many other improvements to Windows Phone.

Here are some shots of the on-device update experience. I’ve only waited two and a half years to see this happen on Windows Phone.

The critical reboot fix that all my colleages are waiting will be delivered in FEBRUARY?!?! Two months from now? What the F are the guys in the WP team doing for their salary? Now that people are actually buying WP the devices are just left rebooting -- in the major WP markets? Surely this was a misquotation... I mean, they were supposed get their act together after the WP 7.8 fiasco... But alas, this is MS and Nokia, so, I guess it is true. I wonder if the folk at Copertino have any strength left to laugh any louder than they already do.

The reboot issue must be small, I haven't seen or heard of it with any of my friends using WP8 on a Lumia 920. As is Apple isn't without issues. Their new IOS 6.02 patch of a patch of a patch is already having problems. Wake up and smell the reality pal...all software is subject to issues.

I love the HTC8X but Nokia has a great reputation of taking care of their customers. Have to go with the 920

I have an 8X and I installed the Portico update last Wednesday. And I'm in Australia. HTC hasn't done wrong by me.

Paul, I like you but how on earth could you skim over the fact that this is US only until February!?!?!

This is completely unacceptable, why do we have to wait in the rest of the world when the U.S. is one of Nokia's weakest markets! It makes no sense.

Where's the bloody enthusiast program when you need it?

Interesting... My sim-free 8X received this update last week (or possibly the week before) in the UK. I found that very acceptable.

I am in the UK on Vodafone. My HTC 8X arrived on Monday (17th). I had the update installed and phone rebooted within about 30 mins of unwrapping it.

Question is - is the update carrier/device specific? If it is - can you side load the update like you can on a Blackberry?

The in call text option is a nice touch - just need to be able to sort out the call profiles (vibrate/tone etc) and volume issues now and I will be 100% happy - I have missed loads of calls because my phone was on silent because I turned the volume down....I much prefer a profile to decide what ringer volume is and have it separate to the 'phone' overall volume...but that is a small gripe....

Halleluiah indeed! But I wonder why the lengthy delay for the rest of users. Usually it's much easier to update unlocked phones... and the changes aren't that big that they should require huge translation efforts, etc. I find it curious.

That said, I am very thankful for the camera improvements on the 920 (MUCH sharper daytime images), and I really appreciate the call reject with text and always-on Wi-Fi option. Merry Christmas from Microsoft, Nokia, and AT&T... now let's hope they continue this practice.

So is it safe to assume Wi-fi always on is not included on this update?
nvm... it is. Hurrary!

I was impressed at how fast, smooth, and simple the update process was. Kudos to Microsoft & Nokia.

So, rest of the world will have to wait at least two months? Don’t really see much ground for cheering Microsoft and Nokia here...

"With Windows Phone 7.x, users found that many updates were delayed interminably, often for months, by recalcitrant wireless carriers...With Windows Phone 8, apparently, that’s changing."

So your network is the first and so the problem is solved; however the rest of us have to wait 2 MONTHS. Sounds much like it was before, except AT&T are first.

After MS promises about being able to choose to update your phone straight away and not having to wait for the carriers I'm VERY disappointed.

Hallelujah! People are starting to get it. I got an SMS from a friend who had ordered a yellow L920 some time ago but has not yet received it (a common theme round here): "Since I am not American, I am clearly not worthy of WP 8 and 920. Cancelled my order. Gonna get soemthing else. The new LG?"

I also witnessed some heated discussion regarding this matter at work. People who have paid EUR 700 for their device are given the finger by MS and Nokia because they are not on ATT in the US -- where the device is much cheaper, of course, and which low price is, hence, of course, subsidized by the local higher pricing, since Nokia has to make some profit, too, somewhere, at least. This attitude does not seem to be going down down very well this afternoon... Maybe these people start to understand they are better off on some other platform and vendor. I mean, what kind of treatment did they expect from MS & Nokia? MS is a monopoly and Nokia has got their CEO from MS. If that duo does not spell "customer-oriented attitude problem" then what does?

I was very impressed. Both of our Nokia 920 s updated smoothly. The camera enhancement is greatly appreciated.

Now if we could only get the screen timeout option of 'never' so that I can keep my screen on indefinitely. Although I waited for a year for that one on Windows Phone 7.5, why am I waiting for the same feature to be added to WP8?

For me, the most awaited improvement is better and more complete synching with Outlook Desktop. How much longer will we have to wait to make it really work?

pthurrott
on Dec 20, 2012

What?

That will never happen. Windows Phone is a modern smart phone platform, not a relic from the past. You don't store data "in" Outlook, you store it in the cloud and then Outlook *and* Windows Phone both access the same master data set(s), as clients. This is a crucial and fundamental distinction.

geeko
on Dec 20, 2012

With "cloud" you are referring to e.g. the Exchange server sitting in our basement? Or to the cached client data and emails and contacts sitting on my desktop's hard disk? Or the phone's local cache? Or what, exactly?

pthurrott
on Dec 20, 2012

Any data store that is NOT on your PC. In this cloud-based approach, the master copy of your data is not on the PC, it's "in the cloud," which can be an online service like Gmail, Outlook.com, Office 365, whatever, your work's email server, or similar. The PC is just an end point for this data, a front-end, just as the phone is. "The truth is in the cloud," not in the PC, not on the phone. So if your hard drive goes south, Outlook crashes, or the PC is lost or stolen, no worries. The data is still available.

Paul - is there any indication of when this will be deployed to the HTC 8X on Verizon? Do you know of any sites we can use to check these dates? The HTC site seems to say "No update available" http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-wp-8x-verizon/

pthurrott

I believe it's happening in early 2013, but I'm not positive, sorry.

SeanAdams
on Dec 20, 2012

Update: Called HTC, they confirmed that they have not yet published a date.
For folk in the US, it's well worth calling HTC's customer call-center on "+1-866-449-8358" to make it clear that HTC need to be transparent about the dates; and rapid in turning these updates around.

I installed the update last night (12/19) and today I have already had two random reboots. Once while using iHeart Radio and the other while using the Audible app. I notice that nothing on the windows phone update site states that the random reboot fix was included in this unless in falls under the generic category of Other improvements. But from what I see... the issue isnt fixed (at least not for me).

LondonOnLogic
on Dec 20, 2012

Having not had a random reboot issue on my 920, I can't comment on that. I will say that as a Rogers Canada client, I did get the update yesterday evening though I had to manually check for it.
The download went smoothly although it took nearly an hour to complete. A touchy issue for me what when the process appeared to a hang for 10-15 minutes at the "Preparing to install... 100%" mark. A second manual reboot was also needed after the udpate complete. The phone suggested this with an alert. Is that a 'random reboot'?
Anyway, I'm happy with the 920 - despite Rogers only offering it in black. For those outside of the US who have limited data plans, the extra on-board memory of the 920 is a big deal and far outweighs (pardon the pun) the lovely cosmetic feel of the 8X. Plus we get all the Nokia apps included.

cpdjoe77
on Dec 21, 2012

Disregard above post. Lmao, contacted Nokia, apparently I just needed a reboot. That's weird since it rebooted after the update. Also, I've had no hard reboots outside of the game age of sorcery. My 920 has been working pretty good so far.
