Windows Phone 8 Sales Up 4X Over Previous Launch

Windows Phone 8 is off to a great start, but will the momentum continue?

One of the many “facts”—as Microsoft calls them—that came out of yesterday’s annual shareholder meeting is that Windows Phone 8 is apparently off to a good start. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said that sales of Windows Phone 8 handsets during its launch period were four times higher than were sales of the previous generation (presumably Windows Phone 7.5) handsets. It is absolutely unclear what that means, if anything.

Microsoft corporate vice president Frank Shaw included this blurb in his 12 Facts from our Shareholder Meeting Worth Knowing post on the Official Microsoft Blog:

“Windows Phone 8 has been on sale for a few weeks and is also off to a great start; we’re already selling 4 times more phones than at this time last year.”

Now, given what’s happening with Windows 8, which also launched at roughly the same time, it’s unclear if this is actually good news or whether this is the start of something—better sales over the long run—or simply the top of the sales curve and that things will slow down over time. There is nothing to suggest that either one of those assertions is correct, I’m just laying out the possibilities.

As is so often the case, all we have is questions. We can easily look up how many Windows Phone handsets sold in the quarter from a year ago. But that number has nothing to do with the launch month, overall, since we don’t actually know how many Windows Phone handsets were sold during that one month. Taking the quarterly figure and multiplying by four isn’t accurate, as sales today could have fallen off a cliff (or risen, to be fair). We still need to wait until quarterly numbers are available.

There are hopeful signs, however.

The most popular devices—the HTC Windows Phone 8X and Nokia Lumia 920—are sold out in many places. And as Peter Bright notes in Ars Technica this week, Nokia could very well have sold 2.5 million Lumia 920s, roughly the same number of total Windows Phone handsets from all hardware makers in the year ago quarter.

Microsoft also announced in a press release that “the Windows Phone Store now has over 120,000 apps, which include 46 of the top 50, and is rising daily.” I’m pretty sure that latter bit is inaccurate and that Windows Phone will soon have 46 of the top 50 apps, but point taken. The app situation is ironing out.

If Microsoft’s partners somehow do manage to sell roughly 10 million handsets this quarter—a figure that, yes, is four times the sales from the year-ago quarter, Windows Phone will still command a tiny slice of the smart phone market. But 400 percent growth is 400 percent growth. We could certainly stand a few quarters of that.

I guess I’m hopeful but realistic.

If Windows Phone does outsell its previous iteration 4to1, which is obviously higher than its competitors, it should finally achieve some headway in terms of percentage market share. Hopefully in the double digits before next version comes out.

For what it's worth I've actually had people come up and ask me if my phones one of the new WP8 devices....but sadly I have to inform them its only an HTC Trophy. MS must be doing something right...either the ADs are raising interest or there are more phones in circulation which is making people curious about WP8.

If they could get more phones available on more carriers, it would be amazing to see what they could do. I've been wanting to buy one since launch, but the only one listed on my carrier is the Samsung and it's not even available yet.

It's good to see the demand is high though. I'm sure production capacity is the hold up here for everyone.

Have been using Nokia 820 for a week. Still on a fence... Like the system, but missing certain apps and quality of some much lower that on iOS. And lack of podcast support outside US really sucks.

Hope it will sell well so market share increases and developers start looking into WP seriously.

I have commented on the app situation before with varying degrees of rage but this is something that I just realized... I don't think I've seen any blogger or even Paul point this out either. (I could be wrong though. My memory fails me from time to time.) For Microsoft to have, at best, an estimated 5% of the mobile phone market share and to, at the same time, have 46/50 of the top apps... That's absolutely amazing. I know that it's Microsoft and that developers will get behind the company to some degree with any release but I still think this fact is noteworthy.

I ordered a yellow Nokia 920 on 11/19, and still haven't received it. In fact, it hasn't even shipped yet. I checked with the store just to be sure something wasn't holding up the order, and the store manager told me that they "aren't even allowed to place orders for the yellow 920 currently" due to the demand. They get in a batch of 920s almost daily, and usually sell out before noon (except for white).

Of course, this could all be explained with pent-up demand, woefully inadequate supply, or who knows. I think it would be good news for HTC, as the 8X is amazing. Like Paul talked about, you need to hold one in your hand to appreciate the finish. It would be an easy decision if not for the camera in the 920.

I think probably the biggest losers in this are Nokia due to inadequate supply (pushing people to other devices), and perhaps Samsung, since they could have capitalized on the lack of devices if only their ATIV phone was shipping now.

You need to email Stephen Elop. The last person to do this was successful in reaching him and he took care of the problem. ;)

I'm finally seeing them everywhere, unlike the 7 series. Target had the Lumia 822 on Verizon with the HTC phone coming soon. ATT had the 8X and 920 available, these phones really stand out next to the Android phones, but a Note sized device would be cool.
