Windows Phone 8 Tip: Use Xbox Music Pass

Xbox Music Pass provides you with subscription-based access to tens of millions of songs

Microsoft’s Xbox Music Pass has been around in various forms for several years, but with Windows Phone 8 it plays a key part in that platform’s broader PC-free strategies, with subscription-based access to the tens of millions of songs in Xbox Music Store.

Xbox Music Pass is a subscription music service for Windows (8, RT, 7), Windows Phone 7.x and 8, and Xbox 360. (Xbox Music clients are expected to open up this service to iOS—iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch—and Android devices in early 2013 as well.) It costs $9.99 a month, or about $100 a year, and covers usage on up to five devices.

Xbox Music Pass works a bit differently on the three modern Microsoft client platforms. On Windows 8 and RT, you get unlimited streaming of content from the Xbox Music Store, which offers tens of millions of tracks. You can also download any of these songs for offline usage. Both of these activities occur through the Metro-style Xbox Music app.

On Xbox 360, you get unlimited streaming only. There’s no downloading, but you can “pin” artists, albums, or songs to a special area of the Xbox Music app called My Pins. I wrote about this functionality in Xbox 360 Feature Focus: My Pins.

On Windows Phone 8, Xbox Music Pass works much like it does on Windows 8/RT. That is, you get unlimited streaming and song downloading for offline use. As I wrote early today in Digital Music: To the Cloud, I use Xbox Music Pass exclusively on my own Windows Phone 8 handset, and in doing so no longer need to sync music to the device with my PC.

You obtain and access Xbox Music Pass-based content in the Music + Videos app.

To find Xbox Music Pass content, navigate to Store, tap the Search app bar button, and then search for the artist, album or song you’re interested in. You can download or stream albums or individual songs, and if you do have an Xbox Music Pass, and have used it before on the device, you’ll see a Download link (instead of Buy) on album pages. (You can still buy music: Just tap and hold on the item you wish to buy and choose Buy from the menu that appears.)

To download a song, just tap it in the song list.

Downloaded music is available offline as long as your subscription is active. So you can play this music while flying or in other offline situations.

You can also stream via Xbox Music Pass: Just tap the Play button on an album or next to a song name in Xbox Music Store on Windows Phone 8. (Remember that music streaming can eat into your monthly data allotment if you’re not connected to a Wi-Fi network.)

What you don’t get on Windows Phone is any way to create cloud- or device-based playlists. Such functionality isn’t technically part of Xbox Music Pass, though Microsoft is offering this on Windows 8 and Xbox 360 as part of its Xbox Music cloud collection functionality. Perhaps this feature will be coming to Windows Phone in the future as well.

Paul, do you know if the streaming works if you are travelling outside US like it is on Spotify?

I'm not sure, sorry. I know the offline downloads do still work. Anyone?

Umm, I'm pretty sure it should still work. I know people who have US Live ID accounts and were using Zune Pass here in Australia long before it was officially made available here, so I don't think it does any IP checking.

I have been using my Zune Pass and now Xbox Music Pass outside of the US for the last couple of years without any issues while travelling.

I am currently in Saudi with a UK-based account and I am able to stream music and download as if I was in my home country.
The whole Video experience seems to be much more painful though.

Paul, you can create playlists on the phone, even though it is not as elegant as it should be, you start playing an album and can the save the now playing as a playlist.

Can anyone explain why the music player doesn't have high speed scrubbing?

I've created "streaming" playlists both on my XBOX and Surface and my Windows Phone can see it.

Creating a playlist on the phone is pretty easy (better than in the win. 8 music app imo)

You just start by adding all the tracks or full albums to now playing then go to now playing and there is an option to save play list.
I do it all the time but I'll admit took me ages to figure out how to do it the first time. It hss been ages since I've owned an ipod but isn't it similar to how they save playlists?

What do you mean, "you don't get cloud or device based playlists"? Is that something MS has declared? I ask because I have found that adding ("downloading") songs to my 8x, does not result in those songs showing up on my W8 PC, Surface or Xbox360. Even creating a playlist on my 8x, does not end up showing on my other devices. However, the reverse works beautifully. Creating, adding songs and playlists on my W8 or Surface first will show up on the 8x. What gives?? I thought it was sync across all devices?

The Music app in Windows 8/RT does not default to sync music and playlists between devices. To enable this, go to the charms bar (Windows key + C), click Settings, click Preferences, then enable 'When I add songs to my music on other devices, download them here too'. Now your Windows 8/RT PC will sync with your windows phone 8.

that's not the problem.. I have that setting and THAT works.. going from W8/RT to Phone.. what does not work is Phone to W8/RT. "Downloading" a song on a WP8 phone will not get it on your W8/RT/Xbox systems. It seems only "Purchasing" them will.. that's TRASH. Never mind Playlists on the WP8 phone go nowhere as well.

Strange thing happened the other day I was on a playlist and tapped the edge. A tick box appeared but I could not find would it did. After tweeting Windowsphonesuppurt they told me it does nothing but may do something in the future. How mad is that. What do you reckon Mr Thurrott?

RobCopestick

I dont think playlists created on the phone can be seen by other devices ie xbox or a windows 8 device.

wtf808
on Nov 24, 2012

Correct, it does not.. which to me is TRASH.. since the whole Xbox Music experiences claim sync across all devices..

I'm really amazed at how greatly Microsoft has bungled this specific feature in the WP8 release. I bought a 920 yesterday, and while I LOVE it... this aspect is highly frustrating. I managed to get the device on my Xbox Music Pass, but initially for the first several hours I was STILL getting DRM messages when attempting to play anything from my collection.

The WP8 sync tool DOES see my Zune collection, including my previously created playlists, but it's a giant step backwards in convenience and compatibility for those of us that do NOT want to have to stream because our data plans are not unlimited. Plus, the lack of podcast subscription support in the sync client is frustrating, too.

I'm really hoping MS gets their act together and corrects this quickly. I will never convince my wife to upgrade from her WP7 device until this gets fixed.

Frustrated.

I agree with you Paul S.. I love my HTC 8X from Verizon.. best phone I've eve owned, but the WP8 sync tools sees my music and I sync it back up, but the phone whines about drm.. I don't want to have to redownload all songs, huge waste of time..

Folks, I'm brand new to the Nokia 920 Windows Phone 8. While I have been able to get somewhat comforatble with setting up and navigating various apps, I'm still very lost with Xbox Music/Nokia Music. I have the Xbox Music Pass as mentioned in this article, but...I don't know if I'm in xbox or nokia music, I don't know whether I downloaded a musci file, and I can't find the "now playing" tile/button. I have a lot to learn, but crikey. I have watched many of Joe Belfiore's youtube videos. He does make it look easy and fun, but I stumble big-time with Windows Phone 8 Xbox Music. I'll get the hang of it one day. Thanks for letting me share.

Ive had a zune music pass (now xbox music pass) for a couple years now. Just recently got my lumia 920 and put windows 8 on my desktop computer. Last night i was playing some music on my computer and the computer went to sleep. I then left to go do some errands, went to stream a song in the car and it alerted me that it couldnt play because my music pass was being used on another device. No question here just want to comment that this is annoying. When the computer went to sleep the music stopped playing but apparently it still was using my music pass... annoying. Thats all just wanted to tell the internet.

So i i have xbox music pass. I see both on winphone and win8 appear as devices.
I down load a song on win8. It appears on the winphone in collections.
It does not look like it downloaded on the phone. I connect it to the pc and do not see my song there. The last thing i want to do is play that song in my car and hot my data plan.
Any help would be appreciated.

I have windows 8 on my PC and I have a Nokia 920. I am trying to build Playlists on my PC with subscription music and then download them to my phone. The name of the playlist appears on my phone but shows that their are no tracks in it. There are 28 tracks in the playlist on my PC but the subscription tracks wont download to my phone. I am a road cyclist and like to listen to my music while I ride so I want to be able to play it offline. I purchased the trial version of Xbox Music Pass for thirty days to see how I liked it. I don't like it very much. I tried to get support but they only offer chat and the person that worked with me told me I could not download subscription music for offline listening. I know this was not true. Any helpful hints would be appreciated.
