Windows Phone App for Windows 8 Gets a Nice Update

Microsoft adds some useful new features to its sync app for Windows Phone 8

If you use Windows Phone 8 with Windows 8, you know that Microsoft offers two PC sync solutions, the Windows Phone (Metro) app and the Windows Phone (desktop) application. Furthermore, you know that these two sync solutions offer different features sets, making the decision about which to use confusing. This week, Microsoft updated the Metro version of app, adding a few new features, some of which were previously available in the desktop application.

This is particularly good news for users of Windows RT, since that version of Windows 8 can’t utilize the desktop application.

The Windows Phone app has always provided basic sync functionality for Windows Phone 8 devices, in keeping with the “PC free” mantra of the platform. You can see how much storage space you’re using on the device, and how much space is used for each content type (photos, music, and videos). You can easily add photos, videos, or music to the device, or copy that content back to the PC. You can configure it to automatically save photos and videos taken with the phone to the PC (though I don’t recommend using it for that purpose since it’s so basic).

But the new version of the app includes a few useful new features:

Ringtones. Now, you can add ringtones to your phone. This capability was previously only available in the desktop sync application.

Playlists. Ditto for playlists, another feature that was previously only available in the desktop application.

Video preview. Now, you can preview videos taken with the phone’s camera directly from within the app.

Share. Utilizing the Windows 8 Share charm, you can “share things from your phone with Windows 8 [Metro] apps (like Photos, or Search). You don’t even have to open the Windows Phone app to move things around.”

I’ve complained a lot in recent months about the lack of progress with Windows Phone 8 and with Windows 8 apps in general, so even something small like this is really appreciated. More, please. :)

You can download the Windows Phone app for Windows 8/RT from Windows Store.

Still missing the most important feature other than syncing images:

The ability to select a playlist (i.e. all 4 and 5 star tracks) and sync just those automatically with any changes over time (and remove ones that are no longer set as 4 or 5 stars)

This was in Zune and it was the easiest way to manage your music on your phone. Brutally difficult to do now, have to use WMP and sync it that way.

But of course they don't want to add that feature considering that the music app won't let you rate songs!!!!!

So, two things here.

1, Xbox Music only supports static playlists right now, not dynamic playlists as this would require.

2, Playlists are theoretically synced automatically through the service, or will be, so syncing this from PC to phone isn't required.

In short, both of these things require service updates, not a sync app update.

Oh, and the ability to delete bad pictures from the phone and not sync them while in the UI, or delete them automatically in both places when you delete them in the preview.

I found the article confusing. Although you briefly discussed the app versus the application, if you merely hooked up Windows Phone 8 with the Windows 8 computer, which program will automatically sync with the phone? Certainly, it will be wise to only have one program, but many users will have both, which means they will sync twice depending if they are on the desktop or in Metro. With so many choices, this has increased the complexity of using Windows 8. I wished MS approach it differently. Syncing should be with the Metro app by default. If the user wished to interface with the desktop application for better control, data will transfer between the two programs to prevent data loss and improve redundancy.

Until I read this I had no idea there was a desktop application! I plugged my 820 in, and was told that MS recommends ... the Metro app. That was the sole option bar explorer. So I've been using that by default in all its limited glory. Having said that. there's nothing I "missed" in all that limited glory.
Mind you, my copy of Win 8 is a bit weird, it refuses to update so I have to use WSUS (a "feature" that even survives a system reset).
So - my answer is, by default it's the Metro one.

I bought a W8Pro/64 disc and my system wouldn't update either. I had to get Level 2 tech support to fix it and it took awhile. I did upgrade and not a clean install. This is a W8 and is fixable. Call MS tech support while it's still under warranty.

Paul, I don't want to use their service, because I have to pay for it. Worse I get ads if I turn it on and don't pay for it. (well, I get ads all of the time regardless of if it's on or not! But I digress...)

I want to be able to pick a play list, or auto-play list in the sync app and have it automatically move them over without using MS's stupid services that cost money for no reason.

In short, I want back what Zune did automatically without the privilege of having to pay for it for no good reason.

Doesn't WP8 have an Explorer interface like Android or Windows 8? If so you could just drag and drop. No need for extra software. If WP8 doesn't have an Explorer interface please let me know so I can remove it from my list of candidates for my next phone.

I still think they should have use the current zune desktop client. Just re-brand it as Xbox Music make it touch friendly and add the drag and drop functionality that's on WP8.

BTW the Nokia Music app for Windows 8 looks and seem to function 1000 times better than the current music app POS that's on Windows 8.

I am not sure if this an issue with the sync app or Xbox Music but album art on the phone differs from the album art on Xbox Music and Zune for example all sorts of artists have a single wrong album cover. There does not seem to be a way of changing it in Xbox Music or in the app. I think they are getting there but if they could have ALL the functionality from Zune it would be great

I wish they would fix XBox Music as a Zune subscriber since the beginning. I have been having major problems with syncing music to my Windows Phone 8x. Cloud sync does not work for me as I have thousands of songs, this creates a HUGE list on my phone that I do not want to scroll through to choose an artist. Also I need the songs on my device as I am out of cell service coverage a lot in mountains.

When I put XBox Music downloaded songs on my phone I get the dreaded error "We are unable to confirm the media usage rights for this content". I have to download the song through the phone which is terrible and tedious for song management. So frustrated haven't even messed with playlists yet. I wish I could also play the songs and remove duplicates in the Windows Phone App too.

I'm happy that the metro version of the software is updated. I really wish though that they would update the horrible application that is forced on Windows 7 users (I assume Windows 8 desktop is the same?).

After paying NZ$990 for my new Windows 8 phone it was a rude shock to be forced off Zune desktop into this rudimentary, 1/2 finished programme. I miss features such as wireless sync to my local machine as I'm charging (I have no desire to sync my entire photo and music collection to the internet - the data charges would be prohibitive).
I also don't like how if I choose not to sync all my music, it unselected every artist so I have to manually select all the ones I want to sync (not good because their are only about 5 artists I want to exclude, leaving a couple of hundred to re-select).
I guess the worst aspect is being forced to move from a fully functioning, feature rich and stable application to a cheap feeling and still not final version of a replacement programme.

It's good to see Microsoft publicly responding to the "Master List of Issues with XBox Music" on the WP Community forum. At least they are recognizing there are issues and are working to address them.

I'm still on Win 7.5 and have 12 months to go on my phone contract. Hopefully by the end, the Windows Phone App for Win 8 will at least be on a par with Zune (which I really like).

This is a big improvement over the original app but far way from Zune software which is leaps and bounds above iTunes. I only hope that this is the beginning of a series of improvements.

I just got a Lumia 920. Had a Focus with WP7. Which do you recommend for syncing with Windows 8? The WP8 desktop app? The Metro app? Can you even still use the Zune app (which I currently have installed because of my previous WP7 phone)?
