Microsoft: IE 6 Usage Drops Below 1 Percent in US

And heck, it only took ten years.

Microsoft announced today that usage of the dated and insecure Internet Explorer 6 web browser has dipped below 1 percent in the United States, joining Austria, Poland, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Norway in finally ignoring this out of date technology. Microsoft now dubs this group "the Champion's Circle," which is cute. But I bet there's a lot of Firefox and Chrome usage in those places too.

Anyhoo, Microsoft provided a couple of fun photos to celebrate the event, which was marked with a Hacker News Seattle Meet-up as well.

In my opinion, a major factor in the loss of market share for IE6 has been the fact that winXP machines are inevitably breaking, and the consumer market is simply buying new computers at that time, which will be Win7 machines running IE8. Indeed, when you look at the numbers, I do believe most people are still, as it stands, if using IE, using the oldest version available on their OS, instead of the most up to date release. Just my thoughts, anyway.

Meanwhile in my local council office here in the UK, IE6 still stalks the halls... along with its mates, XP Pro and Office 97. Except on my machine, ;-)

@Kurisu Yamato: I agree with that assessment. Few upgrade because it is available. Some upgrade because of a particular need for compatibility. The majority however, have been funneled off into the cattle shoot and forced into the upgrade truck by means of the inevitable machine replacements. When I think about all the people I know personally, this holds true as well.

You paint an interesting picture Hg, people being forced into an upgrade truck by machine replacements. By Cybermen?? Have you been watching Doctor Who? :o)
