Apple iTunes 11

Did Apple just remove the suck from iTunes?

Apple today released iTunes 11, the latest version of its digital media jukebox. And while I’ve been critical of this application in the past—for perfectly valid reasons—it is today the only viable media player that runs on Windows and is regularly updated. And go figure, but the new version looks pretty good.

In fact, if you’re familiar with Apple’s redesigned iTunes apps for the iPad—Music, Videos, and iTunes (Store)—the Windows application will look pretty familiar. It sports a similar super-simple user interface with all the complexity hidden.

It also integrates more tightly with iCloud. In the past, you could visit the iTunes Store to find non-music content that you’d previously purchases, but now it’s all comingled together in each view. So the Movies view includes both my previous iTunes Store purchases, available from iCloud, and my locally-stored movies.

The iTunes Store view is now almost identical to that on the iPad, and much more attractive as well.

I’ll need to spend more time with the application to see whether performance and reliability have improved. But now that device sync is no longer required, iTunes on the PC is just like iTunes on a device, a place where you can access your content. Apple doesn’t provide streaming services (yet?) so that’s a minus. But I can easily push updates to my iTunes music collection—including playlists—to Amazon Cloud Player anytime, which isn’t a horrible way to do things.

I know, I know. Many of you hate iTunes. This one looks pretty good.

You can download iTunes 11 from the Apple web site.

Oh, if only Microsoft had kept developing the Zune software and not idiotically split it up into the Xbox Music and Windows Phone companion apps.

100% agree. The Zune software was pretty cool, but like too many of their consumer plays, they just let it sit and didn't iterate over and over and over again to make it slightly more awesome little by little. So they throw that out and then take 5 steps backward. Let's hope to God that they iterate and update the music app to make it better.

Looks better but seems just as slow. A bit buggy, has crashed a few times. Match not working, maybe because it re-scans and sends info to apple, which is probably overloaded at the moment!

You've got me optimistic about iTunes. Congrats.

Also, darn you.

"...it is today the only viable media player that runs on Windows and is regularly updated"

Oh! Dear! And I thought you knew something about Windows and software for it. Just for starters go to the File Forum at Beta News (http://fileforum.betanews.com) and do a search for "audio software".

I have tried using iTunes on Windows in the past and it simply takes over all your audio systems and is extremely difficult to get rid of.

Personally, I use a SanDisk sensa clip+ AND an iRiver E300 media players. I purchase my music (from a variety of sources) only in MP3 format and use 1x1 (http://mpesch3.de1.cc/) or foobar2000 as my media players.

This approach is simple, uses only Windows standard features and, at the end of the day, I OWN and manage my music files.

iTunes is simply a "lock-in" to the Apple iInfrastructure. I can do without that thanks!

Regards,
Peter

Thanks for proving my point.

As I noted, iTunes is the only viable media player that runs on Windows and is regularly updated.

It's not the only media player. It's just the only one that makes sense for most people. Sorry.

Spotify?

"most people"

Hummmm!

By the way, there is no need to be sorry; just an admission of your error would do :-)

It's not an error, it's an opinion. Which I still hold, sorry.

How about Quicktime...do you still need to install that piece of junk and open your computer up to a regular stream of security holes / attacks?

realtestman

As far as I'm aware, the install package doesn't include QuickTime and hasn't done for a few versions now. I have a recently-bought laptop (Windows 7 64-bit upgraded to Windows 8 64-bit) and I haven't actually tried to play a video via iTunes on it yet so can't say for sure.

"it is today the only viable media player that runs on Windows and is regularly updated". Really????? And this is a "Windows Supersite??? Have you ever heard of Winamp?? Not only is it a viable and robust media player, it is regularly updated and can actually sync with ipods! I registered just to log this comment to this sad site, now I will never have to come back. I will just keep using sites that actually know about windows.

LOL. Winamp.

Here's some advice: Medicine is easier to take with applesauce. Try it.

*hehe* Yeah I still use Wimamp as well. I don't care about album images, and I like the genre/artist/album filters. Built-in support for internet radio and podcasts. I can sync music with my HTC 8x and my wife's iPod. I wish it had cloud syncing of playlists but other than that it works well and does what I need. I keep the main music I listen to regularly on my SkyDrive and just use that folder as the local media folder.

One thing that I like about Winamp is it actually uses the MP3 meta-data that's in the files. Too many other players think they are smarter than me and screw things up (I'm looking at you, Windows Media Player - WMP routinely used the wrong album cover image, or split albums into multiple entities because some of the tracks had different composers or contributing artists).

Winamp is regularly updated? Since when?
Version 5 came out almost 10 years ago, and it is currently on version 5.6!

I was really hoping to see variable speed playback in this new version. This is extremely nice for podcasts and allow me to listen to 1.5x - 2x speed and absorb more information throughout the day. Oh well, I will continue using gpodder and listening to podcasts in VLC.

I'm not sure what the right term for iTunes is, but 'media player' is certainly not correct. While iTunes plays media, it also organizes media, accesses a store, etc. So while it may be the best solution for the overall package, as a media player, it doesn't play many formats and apps like VLC are much better.

i only have had a few hours with it, learning how to get used to the way it does things compared to the versions predating it. i like it, though itunes is a love hate thing for me, i only use it because my nano needs its for syncing, i also need it for my 1st gen ipod touch for backups but dont do alot of syncing with it ive turned that into a ipod i keep on a dock for music

Sadly it's true. The Xbox Music app is awful. Zune software no longer works with WP8. My current solution is to somehow link itunes into the the woeful Windows 8 desktop app transfer software.

I just cant believe that WP8 has become less functional than WP7. When my Zune Pass sub expires i am going to have to get my ipod touch back out because Windows 8 music experience is too painful on a day to day basis.

This week interestingly I did upgrade from Windows 7 to 8 on my PC. I only did this because my hard drive had crashed and figured while replacing the hard drives.. why not. After i reloaded software all my applications worked.. until it came to itunes. Every device I try to sync locks up on sync. I was excited to see 11 coming out thinking, that will solve my problems. I uninstalled Itunes and now have the same problem. I cant sync a thing.. but it does look pretty, :-) Anyone else see something similar? Thanks. Paul.. love the site love the podcast on TWIT.

I went back to iTunes 10.7 on Windows 7x64. iTunes 11 must of crashed 8 times or more on me in one day. I simply had to click on Apps section on my iPad in iTunes. Frustrating to say the least.

For me (and a lot of others, it seems) the big problem with v11 is the inability to search devices like you could in previous versions; it seems you can only search items in your Library. That sucks.
