With Epic and Microsoft allegedly winding down the "Gears of War" series of video games with Gears of War 3 this holiday season, I thought it might be interesting to take a look back at the Gears coverage I've created over the past several years. Here are the reviews, previews, and screenshot galleries I created for the four--remember, there was a PC version too--Gears games since the first title was announced in 2005.
As with previous retrospectives, the newest articles are at the top.
Gears of War 3 for Xbox 360 - September 24, 2011
The Gears of War series has been a mixed bag for me since the original, with epic, moving single player campaigns that rank among the best, most interactive video game experiences I've ever had and almost laughable, mind-numbingly bad multiplayer modes. Gears of War 3, the latest and hopefully final chapter in this series, delivers on both of these contradictions in spades. It's beautiful, but monotonous.
Gears of War 3 for Xbox 360: Screenshots - September 20, 2011
Microsoft and Epic have released the third and allegedly final game in the Gears of War series today, imaginatively titled Gears of War 3. I'll be reviewing this epic release by the end of the weekend, but in the meantime here are some screenshots to enjoy while I plug away at the single player campaign.
Gears of War 2 for Xbox 360 Review - November 8, 2008
Gamers rejoice: This year's most eagerly anticipated Xbox 360 shooter--and perhaps the most eagerly awaited game of the year--was released this past week. Yes, I'm talking about Gears of War 2, the sequel to the best Xbox 360 game of 2006 and arguably one of the greatest single player video game experiences of all time.
Gears of War 2 for Xbox 360 Screenshots - November 6, 2008
The biggest video game event of 2008 is happening on Friday, November 7, with the release of Gears of War 2 for the Xbox 360. Here are some screenshots from what promises to be the best shooter released this year.
Gears of War for Windows LIVE Review - February 1, 2008
The PC version of Gears of War, with a few exceptions, is almost identical to the Xbox 360 version. And depending on what we're talking about, that's both good and bad. Despite a year of time between the releases, Gears single player holds up today as a great combination of storytelling, plot, action-oriented game play, and the PC version even throws in several new levels. On the bad news front, Gears PC multiplayer is just as bad as it was on the Xbox 360--which is to say, horrifically, unbelievably bad.
Gears of War for Windows LIVE Preview and Screenshots - November 2, 2007
Epic has ported its most successful game of all time to the PC. I've been playing Gears for Windows for the past few days, and while that's not enough time to arrive at a final score for the game, I thought I'd supply a few first impressions ahead of my full review, along with some screenshots.
Gears of War for Xbox 360 Review - December 3, 2006
Gears of War is the real deal, offering the best overall graphics and sound, and most immersive game play of any Xbox 360 game. It is, beyond question, the best overall game of the year, regardless of platform, and is quickly on its way to Classic status.
